Récis de voyage à Le Havre

Let’s start with the facts, to laugh a little… I surprised a naked man in my youth hostel room, Phil pogneled a man in the bathroom « having fun » during the night, and I bought chocolate bread thinking it was brown bread! Now let’s get down to business… Russes ! Mais on a bien manqué arriver trop tard… So as not to waste our day just getting a piece of paper, we took our time on the way to the station to visit temples and go to the post office. A little more and we’d lose it all! Because even running between each train and subway and then to the embassy, we arrived 5 minutes before closing! And when the clerk finally answered the door at 4:00, he faked a refusal, the funny boy! After Takayama, we got off at Hiroshima, still in shinkensen (high speed train). We visited the Memorial museum of the atomic bomb, very poignant moment of our stay. The other event we will remember for a long time is the sake festival, which again was not scheduled! We had to go to Saijo to visit some traditional breweries, which finally turned into a tasting of more than thirty sake, for the modest sum of 22$. In fact, we had an unlimited choice between hundreds of sake, scattered on an outdoor site. We also visited Miyajima, Nara and Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan. I particularly like this city, straddling tradition and modernity. For what we visited there, I let the photos tell you about their thousand words! As we are on our last miles in Japan and this is my last blog about it, I can’t ignore my impression on the Japanese, who generally seemed to me to act more in the social interest than individualism. I will try to give you a portrait of it accompanied by real-life examples. I find them respectful because they speak low in public places, because they only take up the space they need, because they never stare at anyone, because they never push or even sneak past in a crowd, stopped or moving. And most of all! I find them helpful because they always find a way to help you the best they can, far beyond your expectations! For example, they don’t just point you in one direction (fortunately, because the right and the left are often confused! They also left me with the impression of being very conscientious, thorough, orderly, organized and fast in what they do. Whether it is to reorganize a complete train, clean a youth hostel or give you your change at the checkout, there doesn’t seem to be any trivial task that doesn’t deserve their full attention! However, there is also the other side of the production champions’ coin. I find it worrying to see the quantity of capsule hotels in town, the majority of which are for men only, considering that important positions in offices are mostly occupied by men… Or to read hotel ads promising you »good bed, good work! Finally, I am delighted by Japan in general. I discovered a more industrialized and inhabited Japan than I expected. However, I cannot generalize because this impression is biased by the fact that we have travelled by train, along the inhabited and industrialized areas that this type of transportation brings. On the other hand, nature is never very far away: What particularly charmed me is the little space they allocate to their parking and their yard (almost absent.. We will spend our last days in Osaka, then we set sail for China on October 16th, the day after Phil’s party! Sayonara, a new chapter begins! Kyoto, then around the corner right across the street!
